bitten on the first day of a week-long fishing holiday

A HOLIDAYMAKER died a week after being accidentally bitten by his partially blind pet dog during a playful game of fetch, an inquest heard yesterday.

Steven Sewell, 55, was bitten on the first day of a week-long fishing holiday in the Highlands with his wife Angela and teenage son David. Their 10-year-old Alsatian-Doberman Judy nipped him on the finger as he prepared to throw a stick.

Although the cut was bone deep, the retired teacher thought nothing of the wound and after failing to find any antiseptic at their holiday cottage simply covered it with a plaster.

But six days later he began complaining of shivers, sickness and hallucinations.

The family ended their holiday at Grantown-on-Spey near Inverness a day early to return to their home in Hipperholme, West Yorks.

The next day Mr Sewell’s condition deteriorated and when his face developed a huge red blotch he was taken to hospital where doctors discovered the cut had become seriously infected.

Despite desperate medical efforts Mr Sewell, originally from Essex, died the following day from acute septicaemia after the infection spread to his brain.

He had begun suffering from diarrhoea and losing the feeling in his fingers when he returned home on May 30. He was taken to A&E at Calderdale Royal Infirmary before being transferred to the intensive care unit at Huddersfield Royal Infimary.

The blood poisoning had led to inflammation of the brain – known as encephalitis – and he died in the early hours of May 31 from organ failure a week after the bite.

Angela, Mr Sewell’s wife of 21 years, said after the inquest that Judy had been with the family for two years, was not a vicious dog and the family are keeping her along with Mr Sewell’s other dog.
