Alternatives to Google searching

Post by rob42 » Sun Dec 23, 2012 1:11 pm

Most uninformed Internet users will "Google search" their topic of choose. And who can blame them when the organisation is so heavily publicised by the mainstream media as well as its own advertising campaigns?

But how many users know about the alternatives and why Google should NOT be their tool of choice when it comes to finding the information that is out there.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then you need to understand the difference between the Surface Web and the Deep Web and would recommend this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Web as a good place to start. :bookW:

http://www.about.com/ is one of the most useful web sites that I can think of. A couple of relevant articles that you can find there are...

http://websearch.about.com/od/searching ... simple.htm

http://websearch.about.com/od/enginesan ... search.htm

... and I'm sure that you'll find more if you are interested.

Google is NOT the Holy Grail of search engines – it has it's place, of course, but remember you do have a choice and a better choice I.M.H.O.

also, don't forget http://www.dmoz.org/ the original "human" compiled search engine - and no, they don't list us
