32 New Planets

Post by mj12cz » Tue Oct 20, 2009 6:01 am

European astronomers announced they had found 32 new planets orbiting stars outside our solar system and said on Monday they believe their find means that 40 percent or more of Sun-like stars have such planets.

The planets range in size from about five times the size of Earth to about five times the size of Jupiter, they said. More have been discovered, too, they said, promising more announcements later this year.

The latest discoveries bring the total of known exoplanets to about 400, said Stephane Udry of the Geneva Observatory in Switzerland.

I was reading about this just now. Very interesting indeed. I wonder if any can support life as we know it?

The probabilities are that some do, how many is the question?

This goes some way to explain our place in the KNOWN Universe........absolutely mind boggling!

It's simply ignorant to think we are alone!

There's also the Drake Equation. He came up with an equation that estimates the amount of intelligent life in the Milky Way.

N = R* x fp x ne x fℓ x fi x fc x L

where:

N = the number of civilizations in our galaxy with which communication might be possible;

and

R* = the average rate of star formation per year in our galaxy
fp = the fraction of those stars that have planets
ne = the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets
fℓ = the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop life at some point
fi = the fraction of the above that actually go on to develop intelligent life
fc = the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space
L = the length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space

I think I heard the result was over 100,000 intelligent life forms in the Milky Way alone. Multiply that by the billions of galaxies out there and you got a lot of aliens!! :shock:

The drake equation puts a real prospective on what is out there.
